I use Clip Studio Paint! Keep an eye out for sales, it is hands down my favorite drawing program
Occasionally I use Procreate on my IPad
If you can't afford paid programs, you can try alternatives! I started with Fire Alpaca♡
Does the canvas size matter? Well, it depends your purpose with the final drawing, do you want just post it digital? Print? Wallpaper?
All of these things you can google about, you can search for wallpaper sizes if it's your objective. Or printing sizes if you wish to sell it someday, then the DPI will make some difference, I keep it in 300.
But if you are just a beginner and want to practice, a smaller canvas makes it easier to make quick strokes.
